Jews and Tattoos What's a mother to Do?

Jews & Tattoos: What's a motherto Do?
I found this commentary came in an old Hillel College Newsletter.

A tattooed Jew.
A Jewish college student with a tattoo.

To hear Adam Sundheim tell it, his chance meeting with Chasidic reggae star, Matisyahu, was the heart-pounding opportunity he had been waiting for.

“He came out backstage after his show,” explains the University of Central Florida junior. “And I showed it to him.”

The “it” was a tattoo of the singer, the “size of a CD cover” complete with three Hebrew words inked onto Sundheim’s back.

As Matisyahu nodded his appreciation, he asked his fan a simple question: “Do you know the Jewish law about tattoos?”

And while Sundheim, the grandson of a rabbi, conceded he did know about the Jewish prohibition against tattoos, he explained to Matisyahu that the tattoo was significant to his “personal relationship with Hashem (God).”

Sundheim is not the only Jewish college student to express his Jewish identity with a tattoo. Although no statistics are available for Jewish college students, the American Academy of Dermatology states that tattoos are more common today than ever before. A 2003 Harris poll found that 16 percent of adults had at least one tattoo.

When Jewish students consider a tattoo, they often turn to their Hillel rabbi for advice. “Usually students approach the subject [of getting a tattoo] by asking: ‘Is it true that…’ or ‘My mother said…’” says Rabbi Barton Lee at Arizona State University Hillel.

For most students, they want some clarification of their parents’ most powerful warning: "You can’t be buried in a Jewish cemetery if you have a tattoo.”

“Their folks aren’t going to like this, but they’re wrong,” says Lee.

The news was a relief for Rachel Lazerwitz who went to see her rabbi to find out about the “can’t be buried in a Jewish cemetery thing” after an initial consultation with a local tattoo artist about a Jewish star tattoo for her ankle.

And while the rabbi told her tattooing was still not permissible by Jewish law, her eventual burial would not be problem. But for the Webster University senior, it gave her pause.

“It did actually feel sort of weird. I don’t want to get God mad,” she said. “I had to think about [getting a tattoo] some more.”

“As a Hillel rabbi and as an Orthodox Jew my role is to interact with the students where they are,” says Rabbi Avi Orlow of St. Louis Hillel. For some students that may even mean spelling and drawing a Hebrew word for their tattoo, he says.

When talking to students about their questions on tattooing, Rabbi Shalom Bochner of Santa Cruz Hillel stresses the importance of “recognizing that they are their own person and put their concerns in a human context.”

“The students know it’s a Jewish taboo, but they don’t know why,” says Orlow.

To answer these questions and help dispel myths, some Hillel rabbis have held classes and learning sessions. Rabbi Lee held a Shabbat evening class on the issue of “Whose Body is it?” and Rabbi David Levy at Colgate University and Hamilton College Hillel, facilitated a Sukkot learning session entitled, “Jews, Booze and Tattooing.”

“I wanted to help dispel the rumors. When students are 19, being buried is not their biggest concern,” says Levy. “Instead I ask them ‘when you’re 80 will you still want to have that tattoo?’”

And regret is perhaps a more plausible concern for today’s college student with tattoos.

Justin Levine a “Jew with quite a few tattoos” openly admits that he regrets two Chinese letters he had tattooed on his hips shortly after his 18th birthday.

“They were a fad,” says the University of Central Florida senior. “I might even cover them up.”

Or not. And time will tell if he feels the same way about another tattoo along his side. The four ink-black Hebrew words translate to read: “Follow your heart.”

“It’s important for students to know what our Jewish traditions are and then they can make an informed decision,” says Bochner. “In general, Judaism has more flexibility than people think.”

For more details on the traditional Jewish approach to tattoos:
Tattoos: Hip. Cool. Artsy. Permanent. Kosher?
* The biblical verse, “You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yourselves: I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:28) is the foundational text upon which later Rabbinic scholars developed the prohibitions against tattooing. Rabbinic law clarifies the biblical statute and states that only tattoos of a permanent nature are considered impermissible.

* Maimonides, a leading 12th century scholar of Jewish law and thought, explains that the prohibition against tattoos originates as a Jewish response to paganism. Since it was common practice for ancient pagan worshippers to tattoo themselves with religious iconography and names of gods, Judaism prohibited tattoos entirely in order to disassociate from other religions.

* A later developed and commonly heard explanation for the prohibition against tattoos connects to the Jewish concept that all humans were created B’Tzelem Elokin (in the image of God). The mystical interpretation of this prohibition is that the human body is a holy vessel and a gift from God and as such, we are expected to care for our bodies and treat them preciously, which forbids certain actions including tattooing.

* It is a popular myth that a Jewish person who has a tattoo is not permitted to be buried in a Jewish cemetery. Despite the prohibition, there is absolutely no legal justification to prevent a person with a tattoo from receiving a Jewish burial. Interestingly, tattoos are unique in the sense that evidence of the transgression remains on the body after death.

* In a post-Holocaust era it is important to clarify that the prohibition against tattoos applies only to cases of voluntary tattooing. The Shulchan Aruch (16th century book of codified Jewish law) explains that when a person is tattooed involuntarily or against his will, he is not accountable for the act. This statute is particularly relevant to many Jews who received number tattoos on their arms during the Holocaust.

Did you go to camp as a kid? How about as an adult

Did you go to camp as a kid? How about as an adult. If you didn't you have no idea how your world changes once you have participated in camp life.

It's like moving in to Disney land for two months. Every morning you get to wake up in a small house with your best friends. You have breakfast where your favorite sugary cereal hot or cold is there for you. You can eat it with whole, 1% or 2% milk. You can eat your cereal alone or with a banana or maybe pancakes and/or french toast sticks. After you eat you get to go hiking, caneoing, painting and/or drawing. Or maybe you'll take a bus to another camp, where your school friends are and play volleyball, basketball or tennis.

Then after a lunch of let's say yummy grilled cheese, potato sticks and Campbell's tomato soup you get to go swimming. Then you can select to make a cool duct tape bracelet, or a music video in an amazing music/video studio.

At 4:00 there is always a snack of fresh cut apples/ pretzels or carrot sticks.

More activities of candle making, roller hockey and hand build ceramics. Topped off by zip lining, blob jumping, cheer leading, sewing or karate.

Dinner, shower and more hanging out with friends. Closing with cookies before bed.

Going to camp builds friendships, self-confidence, and leadership traits. Camp teaches you to work with others, respecting their differences and to appreciate people from all over the world with different cultures, languages and lifestyles.

Camp made relationships tend to last a lifetime, and sometimes are almost like extended family members.

The time spent in the short period of 8 weeks that you spend at camp is like being in a mini community. Everyone has their job and is there to work together, to ensure that a good time is had by all. And it does happen.

Camp, is not always perfect. It wouldn't be "CAMP" if it were. Each year the cast of characters may be different, but this adds to the experience. No matter how old you are going to camp is life changing. You get to go away from your regular routine of home life and be in a pretend world for two months.

If you have never been to camp go. If your an adult and want your kids to have what I just described go with them to camp. Have your own fun and be there with your family. (Although I try to be generic in my writing I have to admit I have a tear in my eye thinking about how much I love my camp family and how much they have changed and enhanced my life. Thank you to them all.)

If you are interested just ask me how and I'll be happy to share my secret.....

Getting the right fit.- clothing that is

Getting the right fit in fashion is not quantified by the number of wardrobe or the number of accessories an individual has. But, it is the total outlook of what you project as an individual.

We can't simply afford to ignore appearance. Unfortunately, no one ever became totally poised overnight. Its something we have to work on and the reward is worth every effort.

Right Fit means poise. It means personality and manners combined. It is a combination of good desirable qualities. It's amazing that you know instantly when someone has it. But what is it that they have? It's not that they have more or they have less clothes. It's not that they are so beautiful or ugly. But the way they present themselves that make them to have outstanding personality.

While outstanding personality is not just the result of clothing, it is how it is how your clothing is presented in relation your good image as a whole. The most noticeable is good grooming, good manners, good health, friendliness, self confidence, versatility, humor, and attitude. If you have all of these, you are one hell of a perfect human being.

For total fashion image

How we look and project ourselves have a lot to do with the way others see us. No matter how expert we are at articulating our clothing and intentions, still we end-up in chaos when our clothes sends a message contrary to our intent.

The ultimate rule is appropriateness. If everyone is going to a meeting in their business clothing wear the same. Do not show up in your leggings or slouchy jeans. That's not being chic. It is terribly awkward as if you misinterpreted the occasion. It like going to a children's party in a funeral outfit. On the other hand, if we everyone is going out to have fun, leave the stuffed shirts and LL. Bean catalogue get up at home and put on something a little more exciting.

Make sure you maintain consistency. Whatever style you project should not confuse those around you with the clothing message you are sending. You can be very haute in one day and the total opposite on the other day. (research done by on the job training and internet information)

What IS Contemporary Art

I select contemporary art instead of Modern art, as I choose to create things in the span of my lifetime, instead of Modern Art, which ranges from the Impressionists period (say, around 1880) up until the 1960's or 70's.

Contemporary just means "art that has been and continues to be created during our lifetimes". In other words, contemporary to us.

But in the year 2010 going forward, does using recycled objects as a medium to create art mean that it is more contemporary, than just art that is created now using more traditional mediums. What does it mean to be a contemporary artist in an era where our natural resources are being compromised, and where nature gives us the ultimate one, two punch by throwing Noreasters, hurricanes and earthquakes, and tsunami at us.

Is the medium we use to determine "contemporary" art determined by these factors. Do we use newspapers, bottle caps, bottle tabs, washed up trees and old cardboard in our current art in order to save these items from ending up in a land fill, or from being crushed like they do to conserve space when recycling old cars.

Using electric cars saves fuel and helps the environment, but does recycling random other objects into contemporary art help our environment?, or is it just a rouse to be looked at as a quasi conservationist, or just to be popular and part of the "it" movement of faking it as an artist by trying save the planet one soda can at a time.....

Hello Can you hear me now

That's it I'm done. I hate this entire industry of cell phones. My cell phone has been on the fritz for a while now. I finally decide i'm going to admit that it has a problem, and replace it with one that works. Since the other members of my family always seem to get the available upgrade, I am eligible for a like new replacement of the same phone free from the manufacture. So I go to the local store and they order the new phone and then I wait. The phone comes and no one is home. The delivery notice from federal express lands in the shrubs while it is raining and sits there for an entire day not to be discovered till it is already shredded. They redeliver it the following day and low and behold no battery and no back cover(by the way somewhere last weekend I lost the back cover but I guess that's my fault so I can't complain.)

Now the activation part. You can activate your phone by computer...did you ever try this. First you have to have an account...plug in your phone number..plug in your zip code..hum did I use the business zip code. honk no I didn't use that zip code try the home zipcode. Okay zip code in now they need the #edmiglpd number. What huh ah where do I get that. Okay located under battery in new phone. Okay input, okay now turn off old phone and remove battery and place in new phone.

Okay done, click to activate....SORRY WE CAN NOT ACCOMMODATE PLEASE CALL SERVICE 800 NUMBER UGH SCREAM...OKAY REGROUP
call 800 number hold wait.

Agent gets on talks you through... remove battery.... give them the edmiglpd number yadda yadda...wait press #882 enter yadda yadda okay phone activated. (15 minutes elapsed)

Oh no where are my ringtones, why is there a car riding down the highway on the cover of my phone, where is the picture of my dead dog on the cover. Oh my I don't have my contacts. Who wanted this darn phone anyway. I want my old phone back. Oh I have to rejewel my new phone. I lost the templete. Oh no, I'm getting a txt on the new phone and the phone is honking like a horn I have to change that setting too.

JUST GIVE ME MY OLD PHONE BACK THIS IS TOO MUCH EFFORT. I JUST WANT TO HEAR THE BRADY BUNCH PLAYING WHEN MY PHONE RINGS AND MY DEAD DOG'S PICTURE ON THE COVER NOW IS THAT MUCH TO ASK FOR.

BUT CAN YOU ALL HEAR ME NOW. THANKS FOR LISTENING.

Don't Women wear trousers anymore?

No.......Trousers, slacks, lined or linen...."the pant" has been replace, at least for this season, by the legging. It doesn't matter your age or your size the leggings is where its at. There are stirrup leggings in basic black, as well as full length or capri. They come with buttons, pull strings and zippers. There are leggings in animal print, lace, denim and velvet. They come high waist, low waist and double stitched taped waists.

Free people, french connection, bp, bobi, j cooper, kensie, bcbg, bcbg generation, DKNYC, Kenneth Cole, Jones New York, WDNY and Romeo/Juliet just to name a few are brands that carry them. See these cover our favorite designer so no matter what our age they have them for you. So don't even suggest that you are too old or to ilshaped to wear them.

But you ask "What do we wear them with" The best look is a long t-shirt (long or short sleevea), cardigan or over the head sweater, a long t-shirt covered by a cool short jacket, or a long button down shirt with an open vest. I love tunics. All ages look hot with "short dresses" or now they are called "tunics" go beautifully over solid colored leggings.

A few key cautions however:

If you are older than 16 COVER YOUR BUM.........I don't care if you are Twiggy, you must cover the seat of those pants. No one wants to see visible or thong lines whilst your wearing your leggings.

Reserve the leather, velvet and animal prints to those on the younger side...Unless you are daring and young at heart, keep it to basic solid colors on top if you're going to wear those Mondrian inspired french connection color blocked ones.

So bottom line if you can't beat them join them. There is a way to wear it no matter who you are.

Finally, throw on your Prada, Calvin , Franco, Frye, Ugg or Stuart Weitzman boots and you'll look hot and stay warm for the fall/winter seasons.

What do Suzie Orman and a 28 year old Breast Cancer Survivor have in common

What do Suzie Orman and a 28 year old breast cancer survivor have in common, a cause.....This past weekend we walked, for two days, 39 plus miles for one common goal. To raise money for mammograms for those who need it, treatment for those who can't afford it, money for women to network once they are diagnosed, and to fund the research to find a cure for breast cancer.

Why do woman such as Suzie Orman and Reese Witherspoon participate in the walk, and why would a 28 year old go up in front of 10,000 people and publicly announce that she was diagnosed with breast cancer at such young age. It's not because they enjoy the peanut butter and jelly graham crackers or the two free t-shirts and stuff from the sponsors or massages and free chiropractic services. It is because they need to continually reinforce to us that breast cancer doesn't discriminate. It effects men and women alike. All shapes, colors and ages. Every 3 minutes someone is given the news "You have breast cancer" and hundreds of others lose their lives each day. Everyone I know has been effected by this disease, whether it is your mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother or best friend.

If you have been involved in any of these multiple day walks you know that you have never been the same. You spend the weekend with goosebumps, tears, smiles and hear many amazing stories. You met people just like yourself, and others so different. But they everyone is there for similar reasons. Many walk for themselves, or their loved ones, and others walk for future generations, their daughters and their daughter's daughters.

We all live in a self centered world. It is nice to be with those that want to walk toward, not only a solution, but to help those that may now live cancer free thanks to money we all have raised.

So next year maybe some of you out there will join a walk. Maybe you'll be lucky enough to meet Suzie Orman or Reese Witherspoon or simply a 28 year old that has survived breast cancer. Take a chance get some goosebumps, sleep in a tent, you'll feel lucky and happy to be alive.

25 Reasons why Debby and I walk.....

1. We love the peanut butter and jelly graham crackers
2. Our dad sets up our tent and brings us hot chocolate
3. 48 hours or being with your sister without husbands, kids or cell phones
4. Massages
5. Free Chiropractic (although I have that at home)
6. Free advil/tylenol
7. Free foot massage chairs
8. Free yoga classes
9. Free t-shirts
10. Sleeping in a tent
11. Port a potties
12. Meatballs and hot oatmeal
13. Strangers with wonderful stories
14. Other families that have been affected by breast cancer
15. Because our mother would love to participate in this event
16. We have our own crew: Annette and Dad
17. We get to see New York City from a very different perspective.
18. We love to eat and eat and eat
19. We love to burn calories by walking and walking and talking and talking
20. Unlimited Candy from rebok
21. We love the color pink
22. We love any excuse to shop for a cause.
23. We love to get together with our famiies.
24. We love H&H bagels.
25. Because we love our mother and we'd do anything to make her proud of us.

Have a great meal for great price

We all love to eat. Admit it. We love to go out bring a bottle of wine to a restaurant and enjoy a gourmet meal. We found out last night how to do it for $18.00 person. The best known secret is the culinary school. It is impossible and naive to think that all Chefs are taught their trade in France. So therefore they must learn to cook somewhere. Last night we dined At the Atlantic County Community College Culinary Arts Restaurant in Mays Landing. The name of the Restaurant is Carmine and it is located right in the middle of the classrooms on this very nice college campus.

The restaurant doesn't open until 6 pm so you can come a little early and peak into the various classrooms and see the future chefs of New Jersey learning about food preparation, formulating Menu 101 etc. So it is kind of cool waiting in the hall way looking at all the pictures of previous classes, in their Chef uniforms being photographed with their winning food presentations.

Once inside the restaurant there are students buzzing around being assigned to each table. We had two waiters (first and second year students) who doted on us like we were the king, queen, and page. Can I get you a drink (poured with a plate as a splash guard so cute), here are the specials (hey they asked for rolls should we get them)…….

You can hear the teacher in the kitchen bellowing instructions to the third and fourth year students, to plate this and get that making it reminiscent of the TV reality show Hell's kitchen.

The menu had several choices (escargot on mashed potatoes, Manhattan clam chowder, crab meat gratin examples of appetizers). There is always a special last night was Wow fish and linguine and marinara sauce. The deal I discussed before is their pre-fix menu of an appetizer, main course and desert for $18.00....which is weird as the steak was $24. And you can have it as the main course so it is ridiculous not to go with the prefix.

Anyway, my favorite was desert. We shared 3 large crème Brules, which they prepared at the table by pouring rum on them, and then lighting them fire, and chocolate mousse with strawberry garnish.

Their menu changes every 14 days as dictated by the head teacher. They are open for lunch for a buffet of everything on the menu and for dinner Monday – Friday (no classes on weekends so no restaurant). They are also available for private parties.

All in all, a pleasant, inexpensive evening. (Ours was free as my Dad gave us a gift certificate for our anniversary which is why we ordered three appetizers and four deserts).

I guess the point is that you should try it you might like it.

There is a community college in everyone’s neighborhood, and most have a Culinary course of even school. Below I have listed just a few in New Jersey. Take a look, take a chance and enjoy a gourmet meal cheap but delicious.

All packed with no where to go......

What to pack in....what to bring....what's the weather....all under 30 lbs. I guess this has been a problem for the traveler forever. However the difference is we aren't flying or driving anywhere, we are walking 39+ miles over two days. So not only do we have to make sure we are trained and hydrated, we have to be prepared for two days of intense walking (with a stress fractured foot), sleeping in a pup tent overnight in NYC and unpredictable weather. For the past two days the internet says its going to rain 40%. Last year there was no chance of rain so we left out our rain gear. It poured heavily all night Saturday into early hours Sunday. We started the walk with garbage bags over our heads provided by Stanley (Antonoff) McGiver, which was a g d sent. So we are not going to let that happen again.

So we have rain gear, sleep gear, walking gear, cold gear, warm gear, pain relief gear, blister gear, anti-blister gear and money for croissants and hot chocolate along the route. After all Debby and I were girl scouts so our mom told us to always be prepared and so we are.

Tomorrow I will share with you the inventory in our fanny packs, which we have to pack as a miniture version of whats in our 30lb duffles. Only joking.....

va⋅ca⋅tion   /veɪˈkeɪʃən, və-/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [vey-key-shuhn, vuh-]

Vacation: A period of suspension of work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation, or travel.

If this is the true definition of vacation than why am I not resting, recreating or traveling on my vacation. I did start out my vacation driving 4 hours to and 4 hours from Providence, RI to see my daugther Becky (I guess that constitutes travel). I do admit I had a great time there, but now on day 4, I am doing a lot of other things such as getting a much needed hair cut, returning unwanted clothing, hemming pants, paying bills, making projects (recreation) and selling things on ebay. But so far (and I'm only four days into my 10 day vacation), I haven't done any true recreating. But tomorrow I'm meeting a friend for lunch to help create center pieces for her daughter's bat mitzvah, Wednesday Dan and I are going to the Culinary Institute in A.C. to use a gift certificate we got over a year ago and haven't had a minute free to use and then I finish my vacation Saturday and Sunday walking 39+ miles, and sleeping in a tent to help find a cure for breast cancer.

I think I need to alter the definition for vacation for myself to:

"A period or suspension in time where I do things other than standing on my feet running all over my place at work for 8 hours a day, night and weekend in order to stay home and do the stuff that life is really about like taking a walk with my husband and having a pralines and cream ice cream cone with chocolate sprinkles. Hope the rest of the week which culminates in the walk (in memory of my mom) is quiet, restful and ends with the Sun shining and millions of dollars raised towards finding the cure.......

Where does the idea come from that things happen in 3s

October 3, 2006

We are coming to that time of the year linked to superstitions. Next week we have Friday the 13th - with Halloween not far behind.

Some people theorize that Things Happen in Three's. This can be both positive and negative in connotation. The concept of 3's - goes to 3D or physical reality. We are often told that things repeated 3 times will help them manifest.

Reiki symbols are said three times to empower them.

"Good things come in three's."

To win money once is to win it three times.

On the flip side we find ... "Bad things come in three's." This often refers to hearing about one death as two more follow in a short period of time.(1)

This weekend among all the bonding I did with my daughter, Becky we heard two difficult/sad stories about people that we know. I said to her in passing you know that things happen in threes. She laughed.

This morning we learned of the death of a wonderful person......One can't help but have an eery feeling when you learn of the third event....Then we say to each other. Now good will come, as that three negatives are always counteracted by three positives.

Therefore, I look forward to winning the lottery, losing 5 lbs. and waking up tomorrow 21 years old again......

Providence Rocks

Rain or shine Providence Rhode Island Rocks. Prov is the quisessential college town with Johnson and Wales, Rhode Island School of Design, Roger Williams, PC and Brown. Although JWU doesn't have a real campus downtown it does have one at harborside where the cullinary Institute is housed. However, JWU is so close to Brown that it is worth the walk over the river and up the steep hills to see the cute boutiques. Once on the main street you can have a cup of chi-der tea at a local "coffee bar" or you can shop for blank or 7 for mankind jeans and ugg boots and moccassins at Burks.I'm up here chilling with my daughter Becky and wishing that I were in college again.

Last night we had the longest meal in history at a hibachi restaurant on Thayer street. The food was good but the blonde waitress thought a table of 10 mom's and daughters were probably not going to tip her so well, so she decided not to wait on us at all. So after we got the manager involved we ended up with free drinks and sushi. But the company was good and we had a couple of good laughs. It was nice to meet Becky's friends and some of their mom's.

Becky lives on the other side of town from Brown. She lives in an up and coming neighborhood called Federal Hill. The only problem is that since its just up and coming and hasn't "arrived" yet it isn't exactly safe to walk around alone. So at Becky's recommendation I treadmilled it today, which turned out to be the right choice as it was really raining hard....

Anyway, Becky's apartment, at the Rising Sun Mills, is in between two boulevards Atwell and Broadway. Atwell is okay to walk down, but stay away from Broadway, it's the bad side. Anyway, the complex where she lives is 6 buildings that were converted into loft apartments from a very old Jewelry factory. The apartments are mostly brick with hardwood floors. You can see where the old equipment was taken out and replaced with new wood. The rent is cheap and has a lot of ammenities.
