The Evil Eye

Why the Evil Eye bead is more than just a good luck charm:

The Evil Eye is more than just a superstitious myth, and evil eye beads are more than just good luck charms. They are a reminder that we are all one people.

How's that?

Take an Orthodox from Greece, a Catholic from Mexico, a Jew from Israel, or a Muslim from Turkey, Iran, or anywhere in the Middle East. Different people, different religions, everybody always fighting all the time, etc, etc.

But what do they all have in common? They all believe in the Evil Eye, and they all wear these good luck charms to guard against it.

The Evil Eye is a reminder that underneath it all, we are all the same human beings, even if we think we're different.

In our eyes, that's what makes the evil eye REALLY cool!

Enough editorial, now for the straight story...

Throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East, many people believe envious gazes or high praise from others can bring you bad luck.

The people who praise you probably mean you no harm, but still, evil spirits can piggyback in on their words or looks, and put a bad luck curse on you.

The Nazar Boncuk charm (or Evil Eye Bead) is an "eye", often set on a blue background. It stares back at the world to ward off the evil spirits and keep you safe from harm. It is one of the most common items of decoration in any Turkish home, in any car, or on any person. You can see the charm hanging above doorways, dangling from the wrists of young women, or even planted right into the cement outside modern office buildings.

And always, always, you will see them pinned to the shirts of newborn babies.

What do the colors mean? In Turkey and surrounding countries, the most popular evil eye charm color is blue. Turkey is in a dry part of the world, where water is precious -- with water things prosper and grow, and without it, things shrivel and die. The color blue reminds people of fresh, cool water.

In the Jewish faith, the color red is often associated with luck and good fortune, so red is also a popular color.

When the Evil Eye Bead appears in other colors besides blue or red, it is usually for fashion reasons -- color coordination with one's wardrobe. Beads in the alternative colors have every bit as much protective power as the traditional blue ones.

Evil eye beads go back thousands of years. The earliest written references to the evil eye occur on Sumerian clay tablets dating to the third millennium BC. Agate beads of exceptional quality, worn to protect the wearer from the influence of the evil eye, were also discovered in royal Sumerian graves at Ur.

In Turkey and Greece, throughout the republics of Central Asia, and all the way to the Turkic regions of western China -- the effects of the "evil eye" are believed real, and genuinely feared.

Jews and Tattoos What's a mother to Do?

Jews & Tattoos: What's a motherto Do?
I found this commentary came in an old Hillel College Newsletter.

A tattooed Jew.
A Jewish college student with a tattoo.

To hear Adam Sundheim tell it, his chance meeting with Chasidic reggae star, Matisyahu, was the heart-pounding opportunity he had been waiting for.

“He came out backstage after his show,” explains the University of Central Florida junior. “And I showed it to him.”

The “it” was a tattoo of the singer, the “size of a CD cover” complete with three Hebrew words inked onto Sundheim’s back.

As Matisyahu nodded his appreciation, he asked his fan a simple question: “Do you know the Jewish law about tattoos?”

And while Sundheim, the grandson of a rabbi, conceded he did know about the Jewish prohibition against tattoos, he explained to Matisyahu that the tattoo was significant to his “personal relationship with Hashem (God).”

Sundheim is not the only Jewish college student to express his Jewish identity with a tattoo. Although no statistics are available for Jewish college students, the American Academy of Dermatology states that tattoos are more common today than ever before. A 2003 Harris poll found that 16 percent of adults had at least one tattoo.

When Jewish students consider a tattoo, they often turn to their Hillel rabbi for advice. “Usually students approach the subject [of getting a tattoo] by asking: ‘Is it true that…’ or ‘My mother said…’” says Rabbi Barton Lee at Arizona State University Hillel.

For most students, they want some clarification of their parents’ most powerful warning: "You can’t be buried in a Jewish cemetery if you have a tattoo.”

“Their folks aren’t going to like this, but they’re wrong,” says Lee.

The news was a relief for Rachel Lazerwitz who went to see her rabbi to find out about the “can’t be buried in a Jewish cemetery thing” after an initial consultation with a local tattoo artist about a Jewish star tattoo for her ankle.

And while the rabbi told her tattooing was still not permissible by Jewish law, her eventual burial would not be problem. But for the Webster University senior, it gave her pause.

“It did actually feel sort of weird. I don’t want to get God mad,” she said. “I had to think about [getting a tattoo] some more.”

“As a Hillel rabbi and as an Orthodox Jew my role is to interact with the students where they are,” says Rabbi Avi Orlow of St. Louis Hillel. For some students that may even mean spelling and drawing a Hebrew word for their tattoo, he says.

When talking to students about their questions on tattooing, Rabbi Shalom Bochner of Santa Cruz Hillel stresses the importance of “recognizing that they are their own person and put their concerns in a human context.”

“The students know it’s a Jewish taboo, but they don’t know why,” says Orlow.

To answer these questions and help dispel myths, some Hillel rabbis have held classes and learning sessions. Rabbi Lee held a Shabbat evening class on the issue of “Whose Body is it?” and Rabbi David Levy at Colgate University and Hamilton College Hillel, facilitated a Sukkot learning session entitled, “Jews, Booze and Tattooing.”

“I wanted to help dispel the rumors. When students are 19, being buried is not their biggest concern,” says Levy. “Instead I ask them ‘when you’re 80 will you still want to have that tattoo?’”

And regret is perhaps a more plausible concern for today’s college student with tattoos.

Justin Levine a “Jew with quite a few tattoos” openly admits that he regrets two Chinese letters he had tattooed on his hips shortly after his 18th birthday.

“They were a fad,” says the University of Central Florida senior. “I might even cover them up.”

Or not. And time will tell if he feels the same way about another tattoo along his side. The four ink-black Hebrew words translate to read: “Follow your heart.”

“It’s important for students to know what our Jewish traditions are and then they can make an informed decision,” says Bochner. “In general, Judaism has more flexibility than people think.”

For more details on the traditional Jewish approach to tattoos:
Tattoos: Hip. Cool. Artsy. Permanent. Kosher?
* The biblical verse, “You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yourselves: I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:28) is the foundational text upon which later Rabbinic scholars developed the prohibitions against tattooing. Rabbinic law clarifies the biblical statute and states that only tattoos of a permanent nature are considered impermissible.

* Maimonides, a leading 12th century scholar of Jewish law and thought, explains that the prohibition against tattoos originates as a Jewish response to paganism. Since it was common practice for ancient pagan worshippers to tattoo themselves with religious iconography and names of gods, Judaism prohibited tattoos entirely in order to disassociate from other religions.

* A later developed and commonly heard explanation for the prohibition against tattoos connects to the Jewish concept that all humans were created B’Tzelem Elokin (in the image of God). The mystical interpretation of this prohibition is that the human body is a holy vessel and a gift from God and as such, we are expected to care for our bodies and treat them preciously, which forbids certain actions including tattooing.

* It is a popular myth that a Jewish person who has a tattoo is not permitted to be buried in a Jewish cemetery. Despite the prohibition, there is absolutely no legal justification to prevent a person with a tattoo from receiving a Jewish burial. Interestingly, tattoos are unique in the sense that evidence of the transgression remains on the body after death.

* In a post-Holocaust era it is important to clarify that the prohibition against tattoos applies only to cases of voluntary tattooing. The Shulchan Aruch (16th century book of codified Jewish law) explains that when a person is tattooed involuntarily or against his will, he is not accountable for the act. This statute is particularly relevant to many Jews who received number tattoos on their arms during the Holocaust.

Did you go to camp as a kid? How about as an adult

Did you go to camp as a kid? How about as an adult. If you didn't you have no idea how your world changes once you have participated in camp life.

It's like moving in to Disney land for two months. Every morning you get to wake up in a small house with your best friends. You have breakfast where your favorite sugary cereal hot or cold is there for you. You can eat it with whole, 1% or 2% milk. You can eat your cereal alone or with a banana or maybe pancakes and/or french toast sticks. After you eat you get to go hiking, caneoing, painting and/or drawing. Or maybe you'll take a bus to another camp, where your school friends are and play volleyball, basketball or tennis.

Then after a lunch of let's say yummy grilled cheese, potato sticks and Campbell's tomato soup you get to go swimming. Then you can select to make a cool duct tape bracelet, or a music video in an amazing music/video studio.

At 4:00 there is always a snack of fresh cut apples/ pretzels or carrot sticks.

More activities of candle making, roller hockey and hand build ceramics. Topped off by zip lining, blob jumping, cheer leading, sewing or karate.

Dinner, shower and more hanging out with friends. Closing with cookies before bed.

Going to camp builds friendships, self-confidence, and leadership traits. Camp teaches you to work with others, respecting their differences and to appreciate people from all over the world with different cultures, languages and lifestyles.

Camp made relationships tend to last a lifetime, and sometimes are almost like extended family members.

The time spent in the short period of 8 weeks that you spend at camp is like being in a mini community. Everyone has their job and is there to work together, to ensure that a good time is had by all. And it does happen.

Camp, is not always perfect. It wouldn't be "CAMP" if it were. Each year the cast of characters may be different, but this adds to the experience. No matter how old you are going to camp is life changing. You get to go away from your regular routine of home life and be in a pretend world for two months.

If you have never been to camp go. If your an adult and want your kids to have what I just described go with them to camp. Have your own fun and be there with your family. (Although I try to be generic in my writing I have to admit I have a tear in my eye thinking about how much I love my camp family and how much they have changed and enhanced my life. Thank you to them all.)

If you are interested just ask me how and I'll be happy to share my secret.....

Getting the right fit.- clothing that is

Getting the right fit in fashion is not quantified by the number of wardrobe or the number of accessories an individual has. But, it is the total outlook of what you project as an individual.

We can't simply afford to ignore appearance. Unfortunately, no one ever became totally poised overnight. Its something we have to work on and the reward is worth every effort.

Right Fit means poise. It means personality and manners combined. It is a combination of good desirable qualities. It's amazing that you know instantly when someone has it. But what is it that they have? It's not that they have more or they have less clothes. It's not that they are so beautiful or ugly. But the way they present themselves that make them to have outstanding personality.

While outstanding personality is not just the result of clothing, it is how it is how your clothing is presented in relation your good image as a whole. The most noticeable is good grooming, good manners, good health, friendliness, self confidence, versatility, humor, and attitude. If you have all of these, you are one hell of a perfect human being.

For total fashion image

How we look and project ourselves have a lot to do with the way others see us. No matter how expert we are at articulating our clothing and intentions, still we end-up in chaos when our clothes sends a message contrary to our intent.

The ultimate rule is appropriateness. If everyone is going to a meeting in their business clothing wear the same. Do not show up in your leggings or slouchy jeans. That's not being chic. It is terribly awkward as if you misinterpreted the occasion. It like going to a children's party in a funeral outfit. On the other hand, if we everyone is going out to have fun, leave the stuffed shirts and LL. Bean catalogue get up at home and put on something a little more exciting.

Make sure you maintain consistency. Whatever style you project should not confuse those around you with the clothing message you are sending. You can be very haute in one day and the total opposite on the other day. (research done by on the job training and internet information)

What IS Contemporary Art

I select contemporary art instead of Modern art, as I choose to create things in the span of my lifetime, instead of Modern Art, which ranges from the Impressionists period (say, around 1880) up until the 1960's or 70's.

Contemporary just means "art that has been and continues to be created during our lifetimes". In other words, contemporary to us.

But in the year 2010 going forward, does using recycled objects as a medium to create art mean that it is more contemporary, than just art that is created now using more traditional mediums. What does it mean to be a contemporary artist in an era where our natural resources are being compromised, and where nature gives us the ultimate one, two punch by throwing Noreasters, hurricanes and earthquakes, and tsunami at us.

Is the medium we use to determine "contemporary" art determined by these factors. Do we use newspapers, bottle caps, bottle tabs, washed up trees and old cardboard in our current art in order to save these items from ending up in a land fill, or from being crushed like they do to conserve space when recycling old cars.

Using electric cars saves fuel and helps the environment, but does recycling random other objects into contemporary art help our environment?, or is it just a rouse to be looked at as a quasi conservationist, or just to be popular and part of the "it" movement of faking it as an artist by trying save the planet one soda can at a time.....

Hello Can you hear me now

That's it I'm done. I hate this entire industry of cell phones. My cell phone has been on the fritz for a while now. I finally decide i'm going to admit that it has a problem, and replace it with one that works. Since the other members of my family always seem to get the available upgrade, I am eligible for a like new replacement of the same phone free from the manufacture. So I go to the local store and they order the new phone and then I wait. The phone comes and no one is home. The delivery notice from federal express lands in the shrubs while it is raining and sits there for an entire day not to be discovered till it is already shredded. They redeliver it the following day and low and behold no battery and no back cover(by the way somewhere last weekend I lost the back cover but I guess that's my fault so I can't complain.)

Now the activation part. You can activate your phone by computer...did you ever try this. First you have to have an account...plug in your phone number..plug in your zip code..hum did I use the business zip code. honk no I didn't use that zip code try the home zipcode. Okay zip code in now they need the #edmiglpd number. What huh ah where do I get that. Okay located under battery in new phone. Okay input, okay now turn off old phone and remove battery and place in new phone.

Okay done, click to activate....SORRY WE CAN NOT ACCOMMODATE PLEASE CALL SERVICE 800 NUMBER UGH SCREAM...OKAY REGROUP
call 800 number hold wait.

Agent gets on talks you through... remove battery.... give them the edmiglpd number yadda yadda...wait press #882 enter yadda yadda okay phone activated. (15 minutes elapsed)

Oh no where are my ringtones, why is there a car riding down the highway on the cover of my phone, where is the picture of my dead dog on the cover. Oh my I don't have my contacts. Who wanted this darn phone anyway. I want my old phone back. Oh I have to rejewel my new phone. I lost the templete. Oh no, I'm getting a txt on the new phone and the phone is honking like a horn I have to change that setting too.

JUST GIVE ME MY OLD PHONE BACK THIS IS TOO MUCH EFFORT. I JUST WANT TO HEAR THE BRADY BUNCH PLAYING WHEN MY PHONE RINGS AND MY DEAD DOG'S PICTURE ON THE COVER NOW IS THAT MUCH TO ASK FOR.

BUT CAN YOU ALL HEAR ME NOW. THANKS FOR LISTENING.

Don't Women wear trousers anymore?

No.......Trousers, slacks, lined or linen...."the pant" has been replace, at least for this season, by the legging. It doesn't matter your age or your size the leggings is where its at. There are stirrup leggings in basic black, as well as full length or capri. They come with buttons, pull strings and zippers. There are leggings in animal print, lace, denim and velvet. They come high waist, low waist and double stitched taped waists.

Free people, french connection, bp, bobi, j cooper, kensie, bcbg, bcbg generation, DKNYC, Kenneth Cole, Jones New York, WDNY and Romeo/Juliet just to name a few are brands that carry them. See these cover our favorite designer so no matter what our age they have them for you. So don't even suggest that you are too old or to ilshaped to wear them.

But you ask "What do we wear them with" The best look is a long t-shirt (long or short sleevea), cardigan or over the head sweater, a long t-shirt covered by a cool short jacket, or a long button down shirt with an open vest. I love tunics. All ages look hot with "short dresses" or now they are called "tunics" go beautifully over solid colored leggings.

A few key cautions however:

If you are older than 16 COVER YOUR BUM.........I don't care if you are Twiggy, you must cover the seat of those pants. No one wants to see visible or thong lines whilst your wearing your leggings.

Reserve the leather, velvet and animal prints to those on the younger side...Unless you are daring and young at heart, keep it to basic solid colors on top if you're going to wear those Mondrian inspired french connection color blocked ones.

So bottom line if you can't beat them join them. There is a way to wear it no matter who you are.

Finally, throw on your Prada, Calvin , Franco, Frye, Ugg or Stuart Weitzman boots and you'll look hot and stay warm for the fall/winter seasons.

What do Suzie Orman and a 28 year old Breast Cancer Survivor have in common

What do Suzie Orman and a 28 year old breast cancer survivor have in common, a cause.....This past weekend we walked, for two days, 39 plus miles for one common goal. To raise money for mammograms for those who need it, treatment for those who can't afford it, money for women to network once they are diagnosed, and to fund the research to find a cure for breast cancer.

Why do woman such as Suzie Orman and Reese Witherspoon participate in the walk, and why would a 28 year old go up in front of 10,000 people and publicly announce that she was diagnosed with breast cancer at such young age. It's not because they enjoy the peanut butter and jelly graham crackers or the two free t-shirts and stuff from the sponsors or massages and free chiropractic services. It is because they need to continually reinforce to us that breast cancer doesn't discriminate. It effects men and women alike. All shapes, colors and ages. Every 3 minutes someone is given the news "You have breast cancer" and hundreds of others lose their lives each day. Everyone I know has been effected by this disease, whether it is your mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother or best friend.

If you have been involved in any of these multiple day walks you know that you have never been the same. You spend the weekend with goosebumps, tears, smiles and hear many amazing stories. You met people just like yourself, and others so different. But they everyone is there for similar reasons. Many walk for themselves, or their loved ones, and others walk for future generations, their daughters and their daughter's daughters.

We all live in a self centered world. It is nice to be with those that want to walk toward, not only a solution, but to help those that may now live cancer free thanks to money we all have raised.

So next year maybe some of you out there will join a walk. Maybe you'll be lucky enough to meet Suzie Orman or Reese Witherspoon or simply a 28 year old that has survived breast cancer. Take a chance get some goosebumps, sleep in a tent, you'll feel lucky and happy to be alive.

25 Reasons why Debby and I walk.....

1. We love the peanut butter and jelly graham crackers
2. Our dad sets up our tent and brings us hot chocolate
3. 48 hours or being with your sister without husbands, kids or cell phones
4. Massages
5. Free Chiropractic (although I have that at home)
6. Free advil/tylenol
7. Free foot massage chairs
8. Free yoga classes
9. Free t-shirts
10. Sleeping in a tent
11. Port a potties
12. Meatballs and hot oatmeal
13. Strangers with wonderful stories
14. Other families that have been affected by breast cancer
15. Because our mother would love to participate in this event
16. We have our own crew: Annette and Dad
17. We get to see New York City from a very different perspective.
18. We love to eat and eat and eat
19. We love to burn calories by walking and walking and talking and talking
20. Unlimited Candy from rebok
21. We love the color pink
22. We love any excuse to shop for a cause.
23. We love to get together with our famiies.
24. We love H&H bagels.
25. Because we love our mother and we'd do anything to make her proud of us.

Have a great meal for great price

We all love to eat. Admit it. We love to go out bring a bottle of wine to a restaurant and enjoy a gourmet meal. We found out last night how to do it for $18.00 person. The best known secret is the culinary school. It is impossible and naive to think that all Chefs are taught their trade in France. So therefore they must learn to cook somewhere. Last night we dined At the Atlantic County Community College Culinary Arts Restaurant in Mays Landing. The name of the Restaurant is Carmine and it is located right in the middle of the classrooms on this very nice college campus.

The restaurant doesn't open until 6 pm so you can come a little early and peak into the various classrooms and see the future chefs of New Jersey learning about food preparation, formulating Menu 101 etc. So it is kind of cool waiting in the hall way looking at all the pictures of previous classes, in their Chef uniforms being photographed with their winning food presentations.

Once inside the restaurant there are students buzzing around being assigned to each table. We had two waiters (first and second year students) who doted on us like we were the king, queen, and page. Can I get you a drink (poured with a plate as a splash guard so cute), here are the specials (hey they asked for rolls should we get them)…….

You can hear the teacher in the kitchen bellowing instructions to the third and fourth year students, to plate this and get that making it reminiscent of the TV reality show Hell's kitchen.

The menu had several choices (escargot on mashed potatoes, Manhattan clam chowder, crab meat gratin examples of appetizers). There is always a special last night was Wow fish and linguine and marinara sauce. The deal I discussed before is their pre-fix menu of an appetizer, main course and desert for $18.00....which is weird as the steak was $24. And you can have it as the main course so it is ridiculous not to go with the prefix.

Anyway, my favorite was desert. We shared 3 large crème Brules, which they prepared at the table by pouring rum on them, and then lighting them fire, and chocolate mousse with strawberry garnish.

Their menu changes every 14 days as dictated by the head teacher. They are open for lunch for a buffet of everything on the menu and for dinner Monday – Friday (no classes on weekends so no restaurant). They are also available for private parties.

All in all, a pleasant, inexpensive evening. (Ours was free as my Dad gave us a gift certificate for our anniversary which is why we ordered three appetizers and four deserts).

I guess the point is that you should try it you might like it.

There is a community college in everyone’s neighborhood, and most have a Culinary course of even school. Below I have listed just a few in New Jersey. Take a look, take a chance and enjoy a gourmet meal cheap but delicious.

All packed with no where to go......

What to pack in....what to bring....what's the weather....all under 30 lbs. I guess this has been a problem for the traveler forever. However the difference is we aren't flying or driving anywhere, we are walking 39+ miles over two days. So not only do we have to make sure we are trained and hydrated, we have to be prepared for two days of intense walking (with a stress fractured foot), sleeping in a pup tent overnight in NYC and unpredictable weather. For the past two days the internet says its going to rain 40%. Last year there was no chance of rain so we left out our rain gear. It poured heavily all night Saturday into early hours Sunday. We started the walk with garbage bags over our heads provided by Stanley (Antonoff) McGiver, which was a g d sent. So we are not going to let that happen again.

So we have rain gear, sleep gear, walking gear, cold gear, warm gear, pain relief gear, blister gear, anti-blister gear and money for croissants and hot chocolate along the route. After all Debby and I were girl scouts so our mom told us to always be prepared and so we are.

Tomorrow I will share with you the inventory in our fanny packs, which we have to pack as a miniture version of whats in our 30lb duffles. Only joking.....

va⋅ca⋅tion   /veɪˈkeɪʃən, və-/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [vey-key-shuhn, vuh-]

Vacation: A period of suspension of work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation, or travel.

If this is the true definition of vacation than why am I not resting, recreating or traveling on my vacation. I did start out my vacation driving 4 hours to and 4 hours from Providence, RI to see my daugther Becky (I guess that constitutes travel). I do admit I had a great time there, but now on day 4, I am doing a lot of other things such as getting a much needed hair cut, returning unwanted clothing, hemming pants, paying bills, making projects (recreation) and selling things on ebay. But so far (and I'm only four days into my 10 day vacation), I haven't done any true recreating. But tomorrow I'm meeting a friend for lunch to help create center pieces for her daughter's bat mitzvah, Wednesday Dan and I are going to the Culinary Institute in A.C. to use a gift certificate we got over a year ago and haven't had a minute free to use and then I finish my vacation Saturday and Sunday walking 39+ miles, and sleeping in a tent to help find a cure for breast cancer.

I think I need to alter the definition for vacation for myself to:

"A period or suspension in time where I do things other than standing on my feet running all over my place at work for 8 hours a day, night and weekend in order to stay home and do the stuff that life is really about like taking a walk with my husband and having a pralines and cream ice cream cone with chocolate sprinkles. Hope the rest of the week which culminates in the walk (in memory of my mom) is quiet, restful and ends with the Sun shining and millions of dollars raised towards finding the cure.......

Where does the idea come from that things happen in 3s

October 3, 2006

We are coming to that time of the year linked to superstitions. Next week we have Friday the 13th - with Halloween not far behind.

Some people theorize that Things Happen in Three's. This can be both positive and negative in connotation. The concept of 3's - goes to 3D or physical reality. We are often told that things repeated 3 times will help them manifest.

Reiki symbols are said three times to empower them.

"Good things come in three's."

To win money once is to win it three times.

On the flip side we find ... "Bad things come in three's." This often refers to hearing about one death as two more follow in a short period of time.(1)

This weekend among all the bonding I did with my daughter, Becky we heard two difficult/sad stories about people that we know. I said to her in passing you know that things happen in threes. She laughed.

This morning we learned of the death of a wonderful person......One can't help but have an eery feeling when you learn of the third event....Then we say to each other. Now good will come, as that three negatives are always counteracted by three positives.

Therefore, I look forward to winning the lottery, losing 5 lbs. and waking up tomorrow 21 years old again......

Providence Rocks

Rain or shine Providence Rhode Island Rocks. Prov is the quisessential college town with Johnson and Wales, Rhode Island School of Design, Roger Williams, PC and Brown. Although JWU doesn't have a real campus downtown it does have one at harborside where the cullinary Institute is housed. However, JWU is so close to Brown that it is worth the walk over the river and up the steep hills to see the cute boutiques. Once on the main street you can have a cup of chi-der tea at a local "coffee bar" or you can shop for blank or 7 for mankind jeans and ugg boots and moccassins at Burks.I'm up here chilling with my daughter Becky and wishing that I were in college again.

Last night we had the longest meal in history at a hibachi restaurant on Thayer street. The food was good but the blonde waitress thought a table of 10 mom's and daughters were probably not going to tip her so well, so she decided not to wait on us at all. So after we got the manager involved we ended up with free drinks and sushi. But the company was good and we had a couple of good laughs. It was nice to meet Becky's friends and some of their mom's.

Becky lives on the other side of town from Brown. She lives in an up and coming neighborhood called Federal Hill. The only problem is that since its just up and coming and hasn't "arrived" yet it isn't exactly safe to walk around alone. So at Becky's recommendation I treadmilled it today, which turned out to be the right choice as it was really raining hard....

Anyway, Becky's apartment, at the Rising Sun Mills, is in between two boulevards Atwell and Broadway. Atwell is okay to walk down, but stay away from Broadway, it's the bad side. Anyway, the complex where she lives is 6 buildings that were converted into loft apartments from a very old Jewelry factory. The apartments are mostly brick with hardwood floors. You can see where the old equipment was taken out and replaced with new wood. The rent is cheap and has a lot of ammenities.

So right now Becky is playing the guitar, we are waiting for pizza to arrive and roommate Steph and friend Monica are out getting a dvd from red box. Pizza and peace out......

Lucky Brand is just timeless. Right now with fashion being thrown back to the 80's, we can still find comfortable stylish affordable jeans with Lucky.

Lucky features their thermal shirts and classic T's with 80s inspired graphics which includes faces, flowers and peace signs its enough to have to buy two because it is so hard to choose just one . Anyway now for the jeans.

There are tons of styles in the Lucky line and now with the Vintage line there is a lot of styles, washes and looks to choose from. The Vintage jeans are little bit more expensive at $115 - $129. but you can still get a basic pair of Lucky's for $79-$99.

Avenu Malkenu forgive me for the sin.........shopping

We reflect today on the sins that we have committed over the past year. I find that I lead a pretty clean life and that my biggest sin is that I am a shop-a-holic.

There I have said it out loud. My husband will be thrilled to hear that I have admitted it in writing. Something he has told me over and over for many years. (I have confessed many times to my girl friends in jest, but I now know it is true).

I keep rationalizing that I don't smoke, drink, party or even go out (at all), so that my shopping for great bargains is really okay (or that I get an amazing discount at work). That because I am pretty dull otherwise that spending money we don't have counteracts the acts of kindness that I do for others to compensate for the shopping.

So I have turned over my retail credit card (and the other secret laminated card I keep in my wallet), over to the husband. Not permanently, but until I get a better handle on why I have to shop and why I feel so good when I buy something.

But will I be able to stop cold turkey. How will I handle it when the new trucks come in on Monday with those fabulous Free people styles ........ Do they have a seven step program for shopaholics. Will my friends and family be able to handle me while I go through withdrawal. Will last years boots, jeans, blazers and dresses be able to keep me going through this dry period. I better stop now because my brain is already drifting off and thinking about having to wear an old dress to temple today and am forgetting that I am here to confess, repent and change my behavior.

If I can walk 40 miles for breast cancer, maintain my weight within 3 lbs for 30 years, than I can certainly live without new cloths for at least a month. I intend to pay off my card within two months, while selling things on ebay.

Although it is out in the open in writing, I still don't feel any remorse, I have alot of beautiful things .....but I promise to keep thinking about three of us in college, Bruce going in two years and the mortgage payment is still due in three days.

Safe and easy fast........

Fascination with Makeup

It is a fact that the cosmetic department of retails stores is the driving factor of their daily income. That is the bread and butter of their sales. I mean stores go to many lengths to bring in the women, the makeup consuming women who love to buy the newest colors or the newest trends. What do I mean....about them being the driving factor. The fact is that the cloths and accessories in stores can be discounted, coupon eligible yadda yadda....but cosmetic sales is what it is all about. So they bring in the promotions gift with purchase, cut your hair and cream your face and sing you a song anything to bring you in to purchase more of these products.

What is it with women and cosmetics????????????

Since even before the days of Cleopatra woman have been formulating colors to place on their faces to enhance their features. The pigments that were used back in her days were from berries and all natural products. Then as the years and progress happened, it was about color and how to replicate it, so we brought scientific expertise into the laboratory to make fabulous colors and innovative techniques.

The funny part is that now the trends are back to all natural. We are making cosmetics as well as our foods with berries again. We are back to nature. Why I guess because all these chemicals have polluted the earth and the toxins have all entered our skin..

So back to nature. Does this answer why are women so obsessed with makeup. I don't know. I personally don't get it. My mother wore a little eyeshadow (green) and a little foundation but never really spent time or money on makeup. Hence she past this trait onto all three of her daughters.

Even today her 3 1/2 grandchildren don't seem to carry the obsession with makeup gene.
It does fascinate me and I am sometime envious of the women that work in the cosmetic bays. They either come into work fully made up or they come with their clean skin and put their faces on before the store opens. I just don't understand the layers of first skin care, then foundations then layering of the eye shadow colors and eye liner, eyebrown pencil, mascaras and eye lash curlers.

I know at 50 I should be paying some attention and I do use skin care products. I've been told to hold on to what ever elasticity is left in my skin. I've been told that I have to hydrate my skin because as you age your skin thins out and is left dry. So I buy into that a little bit. I do see the aging process happening to my skin.

But I still don't buy or buy into the entire obsession with makeup and having to be made up. I do admit however that I sneak over to the Nars counter ocassionally and use q tip to put a little shadow on my eyes, maybe a little gloss but no dollars spent on this girls credit card on makeup.

I know many of you are rolling your eyes at me right now so please comment push the little button after the blog entry and tell me your thoughts on makeup.......Raining but going to get my butt outside anyway was home alone for most of the night last night and enjoyed 2 ice cream sundaes.

Saks Fifth Argue....

I don't know about you but I was in Saks Fifth Avenue in Short Hills last night. We had a $25.00 gift certificate to spend. We knew we would have to add to it but after 30 minutes ended up with 2 pairs of panties. There was nothing in the store to buy. I'm not talking about everything was too expensive, I'm talking nothing to buy. I sort of felt like I was at Barney in the city. You know you walk around and oh and ah because the cloths are magnificent and you can't touch them, because they are so out of your price range.

I didn't even ah at this Saks . I felt sorry for the sales people who were standing around. Their lingerie department was the size of my dining room table. The only action in the store was in the cosmetic department.

Even their active brands were sparse juicy couture, theory, bcbg, spence and james perse were the only brands available. I saw a small Marc Jacobs section but that was on the second floor. Their shoe and handbag departments were tiny.

I was so sad. I used to enjoy walking through this store and looking at all the top fashion styles. Last night was just sheer disappointment. I took my $26.50 on gossimer panties and left sad for this store and our economy. ...

Of course I still oy and ay when I went into the Free people store but that's another blog for another day ....Have a great day its chilly but I'm still off for my walk...and then work

Who the heck am and I why do I deserve you

It has been brought to my attention that I have been blogging on and on as a Mod housewife and beyond a simple introduction of my family structure that I haven't given you any background of where I get off discussing denim, crafts, dogs and "cancer"?

I am a long time , 23 year, housewife. Over these years I have had many jobs, in the fields of finance, corporate party planning, motor vehicle identification, public relations, substitute teaching (including autistic students), girl scout leadership, substitute teaching and working at sleep-a-way camp (11 years). I currently work in the modern/contemporary department in a major, local department store. I enjoy coordinating customers outfits, and I get a high each time a client leaves the store with a smile saying that they have the perfect ensemble for their upcoming event.

I somehow am lucky enough to have a following of friends (my clients started off as customers) that I actually look forward to seeing in the store so that I can show them the latest trends et al.

Regarding my crafty creative side, I have been dabbling in the creative arts (not an artist) for many many years and I have finally been able to express and share this side of me as the Arts and Crafts specialist at a conservative jewish camp in Milford PA. I try to use many recycled items in the crafts that I do with the campers and in return I learn from them as well.

The bottle cap necklaces shown in the blog were made at camp. Many of them were sold during the summer in order to send money to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer which I walk 39+ miles every year.

I walk along with my family. My sister Debby, niece Nicole, cousin Randie. Every year we have additional team members Karen Abramson is walking with us this year. Included in our crew is our dad Stanley Antonoff, and the fabulous Annette Kaplan, who will be part of the hospitality group.

My mom was a breast cancer survivor, but passed in 2001 from a primary tumor in her brain. I walk in honor of survivors such as my Aunt Ann, Fran Mann, Ronnie Kinnis, Lori Shilling, Kathy Schneier, Toni Viccardi, Barol Barry,Nurse Pat, Sandy Lazurs and in memory of my grandmother Becky Friedman, Eleanor Satir, Julia Schroder, Marilyn Berner, Florence Robinson and Suzanne. I also walk for many others. Each year this list of women is listed on my back .

If there is anyone else you want me to walk in honor or memory of please just comment on the blog and I will add their name.

So this is just the tip of the ice berg of who I am. Currently I am about to complete my teaching certification in K-6 and will be student teaching shortly.

There are many levels of the Mod housewife-heididdle, and I am just beginning to peel through the layers.

I hope this blog will be fun as well as informative. It will be on fashion, design, styling and about life and how we have to all get through it. And damn it, I hope to make it fun and fulfilling at the same time.

If there is a fashion or fun topic you want me to include, please make a comment

And finally be sure to include yourself in the denim poll at the bottom of the blog

Have a darn good denim day

Denim List of terms

Acid Wash- process of soaking pumice stones in chlorine and letting these stones create contrast - the denim is given a specific mildly bleached appearance.

Hand Sanding: Sand paper is used to physically sand the jeans by brushing the sandpaper across areas of the jean with the desired pattern , making them look old and worn out.

Inseam - The seam length on the inside of the leg (eg. 30" inseam for use short people)

Rise - Measure from the top of the waisitband to the bottom of the crotch. As a general rule low rise sits 2" or more below the belly button. A regular rise sits just below the belly button and a high rise sits at or above the belly button.

Stone Wash a type of wash where jeans are abraded with stones for a more worn in look.

Whiskers- The creases /folds naturally sppearing on the front of your jeans;

*Dictionary thanks to fall 2009 denim standards guide:

Guess???????---Jeans that is........

Guess jeans: As seen on television on these gorgous blonde skinny girls and at one time Anna Nicole Smith.

They are all low rise ....However before I tell you the individual style I am obsessed with their new stretch "non-jean". These pants fit like a legging, and are not too low rise, but look like a skinny jean. The best part is they make you look "hot". My friend and I both had them on. My friend has a more womanly figure and took them in a size 31 and I had them on in a 24, we both looked awesome. The denim color is a rich almost turquoise blue and they also come in black. They tighten your butt and make it look great. The front pockets are fake but there are two functioning pockets in the back. They are not really denim but they certainly look like skinny jeans and will be great for tucking in boots. So when in the store these are a must try on. And now the rest of the guess line.

Daredevil Skinny -very low rise - slim fit - skinny

When they say low rise they mean two inches below your belly button. These jeans have a really cute large button in the front and come in four washes. Center which is a blue contrast wash with "whiskering" around the pockets and faded thighs and lows. These come in short lengths

Black -over dyed denim

Harley - Vintage medium blue denim sometimes with appropriate rips.

Revival - Mild blue with high contrast wash more whiskering and creases throught the leg and pocket area.

Daredevil Boot - very low rise - slim fit - boot cut

Dark rinse - available in short length no contrast just straight dark (alot of you hate the contrast so this is great with solid color throughout )

Mariposa - also available in short length -high contrast with that distressed look with small tearing at pocket.

Back stage - medium wash with high contrast at waistband and pocket scrunching

Vintage - that worn in look with small tearing near pockets.

Daredevil flare - very low rise - slim fit - flare (opening flare 20 1/2 ")

Rocket - medium wash with contrast on thigh

Pacific dark - dark blue wash with whiskers on thigh.

Foxy Flare ulta low rise - slim fit - flared leg (19 1/2 " opening) 3" below belly button

Graffitti high contrast medium wash with tonal highs and lows.

Heaven - dark grey wash with minor tears and contrast on highs and lows

Foxy Skinny - utra slim fit - ultra low rise - skinny leg (12 3/4 leg opening )

Dark rinse- available in short lengths extremely dark rinse

Over all a great looking jean. If you have the body and the youth you can pull these off. Please remember no matter when body type to try the new stretchy pants.

Not Your Daughters Jeans

Okay so today I jumped into the jean brand "Not Your Daughter's" Jeans which also included Tummy Tuck. These jeans are offered both in regular and petite (might be offered in American Woman also but I admit I forgot to look). They also offer a trouser jean but I didn't see it in this perticular store.

Since I am vertically challenged I tried mine on in the petite department and was impressed with the perfect 30" length. The regular length I believe is 33"...

The jeans come in the following styles in light denim, dark denim, some grey with embellished pockets and black.

Sarah boot leg. This style hits you just at your belly button. The jeans are slim but not terribly tight through the leg with a bootleg. Girls I must admit the fabric on these jeans are oh so soft. NYDJ are great for those of us that hate that low rise jean. Even a little more midrise than DKNY Jeans which are a favorite for all those low rise haters.

Marilyn Slim Leg. Again a similar fit in the rise at the belly button but these jeans are a true skinny jean. They do make your butt look fabulous.

Over all I liked the way these jeans fit. At a price point of $99.00. they are pricey but know where near the prices of other premium brands which will be discussed at a later date.

These are not your daughter's no stretch , low rise, crotch hugging jeans. They are made for women with bodies who want to look hot in jeans and at the same time comfortable and classic.

And for those in the know you can use your bill coupon at a certain store to get a 15% discount on a regular month or 20% off on your birthday month.

Tomorrow look for Michael Kors.

What is it with Man's best friend

I admit it I wanted a dog. After Sandy died just after her 10th birthday I felt a great loss. She was a great pet and although she barked alot she was there for our family to cuddle, play and be there when I had a bad headache or a great day.

Now there is Ginger. I guess getting a new puppy is sort of like giving birth. ten years later you forget how tough it is, and then you go and do it again. I don't remember training and raising Sandy, but with Ginger my house is still a giant toilet. I know I know, If I walked her more often she wouldn't make in the house, or if I just confined her to the kitchen she wouldn't make where she lives.
Get over it.

I walked the darn dog around the block this morning she peed, pooped and smelled the entire .8 mile circle and then she peed in my bedroom, as I was doing my sit ups, almost on my head.

I don't say that I give up, I've just had enough. Yes she's cute and lovable and last night I loved that she fell asleep in my arms for an hour (Sandy could never sit for 5 seconds on my lap). But gosh darn if I can't get her to stop making in the house. I don't need comforting or a lecture I just need to vent. I won't even get into the fact that she ate the honey cake right off the kitchen counter or that she is terrified of the 6th grader across the street. Oy vey I had to have another child since I've done so well with the other 3........

Message in a Bottle Cap- We donated to a good cause

The Bottle Cap necklace was the hit of the summer. The children at camp were obsessed with making these adorable necklaces, which are simply photographs glued inside vintage soda bottle caps. We made hundreds of these over the last couple of weeks of camp. The cool part about them is that the campers came up with the idea that we could sell them to raise money to find a cure for breast cancer.

So during the 2nd to last Friday night of camp we did. The campers, my staff and I made necklaces all sorts and we raised $415.00 for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

So the past three weekends Dan brought them to the flea market and the stories that are attached with each purchase of these bottle caps touches your heart.

A husband passes by and admires the necklaces, he relates that his wife is fighting cervical cancer, the passerby that says my mom is a survivor, or the ticket taker of the flea market that says "what a great idea, I'll buy one". We don't have to sell the idea or scream bottle cap necklaces for sale, they just get buy them and relate their stories.

There are many people out there who have been touched by cancer. If these necklaces are the link to making us remember, support, fight a cause with a cute necklace to cheer us up than that is what we will do.

Remember the Avon walk is just 22 days away. You can donate to Na's girls at www.avonwalk.org (donate to team Na's girls) or click on my blog just below and it will go directly to the link.

Have a great day.

Waking up at the Ocean

No matter what mood or frame of mind you are in when you go to bed at the shore, you wake up to hearing the waves rolling over that sparkly white sand, and the sun shining, and you can't help but smile. Waking up on Long Beach Island has always been my favorite place on earth. It doesn't matter where you wake up, although I am in a beautiful home in Long Beach Township, it is always the same. White sand, sun and paradise. Getting up early going for a long walk and eating fresh fruit for breakfast makes for the beginning of a beautiful day. Being with my family and extended family I wouldn't be any other place. Good morning to my husband at the flea market, which isn't a bad place to be on a gorgous morning. Happy New Year

Bye Bye Birdie Review

Go see it...Whether in preview or reel time Bye Bye Birdie is terrific. I am not just saying it because Paul Pilcz is in it as Harvey Johnson , I totally enjoyed the play. John Stamos is adorable as Albert Peterson and I felt Gina Gershon held her own as Spanish Rose "Rosie". But the other critics were right it is the "teenagers" that make the show. The telephone scene rocked as well as the giant jungle gym that was built for them to hang and sing off of.

Bill Irwin who plays Kim's father is hysterical in an almost "Jim Carrie" type way. His physical comedy along with his great mannerisms and voice make the character. Albert's mother played by Jayne Houdyshell was the quesessential stick my head in the oven and leave me alone mom.

Once again the teenagers did an amazing job. I am proud to say that I was able to watch Paul make his dream come true. He was hot in his bright orange suit, I'd accompany him to the prom any day

Wild Turkey the winged kind

I ventured out for a small walk to to test the healing of my stress fracture. I got about a mile into and there they were.....three of them The wild turkeys, However, they were too busy fighting with each other to notice that I was there, so I just crossed the street as quickly as I could, holding my breath, and passed them with no problem. Will this cure my fear of these two legged, winged animals no, but when I eat Turkey tomorrow night it will make the meat even sweeter.

If you are new to this blog you should know that a while back I was attacked by three wild turkeys, okay friends and family you can stop laughing now. The fact that I had to literally climb a tree and wait for a passing old man in a car to save me, makes the laughing even deeper. But I am emotionally scarred for life, and I am afraid to go even near these, or any other animals. This even includes the wild geese that are on this earth to just poop and cross the road with their babies

Bye Bye Birdie Day

How many people out there can say that their good friend's son is on Broadway. I can Paul Pilcz is currently performing as Harvey Johnson in the Revival of Bye Bye Birdie starting John Stamos and Gina Gershon. The reviews so far say that the kids are the best part of the show. That their enthusiasm and excitement electrify the room and bring the play to life. Well I'm off to review it for myself and I get to bring the star home in my car after he signs his autographs. Go Paul.

Baking honey cake and then New York City what could be wrong that with.....Have a sweet day

Naomi's Honey Cake best you'll ever eat

My father will tell you, as well friend Allen that if your going to eat honey cake for the New Year it should be the honey cake made by Naomi. The cake itself is great but the story behind it makes the cake all the sweeter to eat.

Picture 51 years ago a newly wed couple living in garden apartments in Palisades Park NJ. The wife makes her first honey cake for her honey, which calls for 1 cup of coffee. The dutiful and excited husband bites into the cake only to find a full cup of coffee grounds. crunch crunch crunch and so the beginning of a beautiful 44 year marriage.

Here is Na's Honey Cake

she notes on her recipe card use mixmaster

Preheat over 350
use 9x12x2 pan
seprate 2 eggs and put whites in small bowl
yolks into large bowl
add 1/4 c oil and 1 Cup sugar
mix thoroughly at medium speed
sift 2 1/2 Cup flour (sift then measure)
2 teaspoons basking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinaman
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Add dry ingrediants to egg mixture alternating with 1 cup coffee (not the grinds LOL) mixing well in between.
Beat egg whites until stiff and then fold into the other mixture carefully
bake 45 to 50 minutes

hints separate eggs while they are cold
fold the white mixture in don't stir in you have to keep the height in the batter

Again a happy and healthy sweet new year. Back to the Jeans fitting process after the holiday

Middle of the morning interruption-for the cause

Okay so my walk was shortened today due to the discovery of 100 or so Sports Illustrated magazines. I need magazines for next summer especially for the boys/sports oriented campers. It is recycle day here in town and a neighbor is evidentally preparing to move, hence their sports illustrated magazines are neatly tied in bundles outside their house. So I carred the first pile of 30 or so magazines the 1/2 mile back to my house. I thought that each lap I could carry a bundle so that I would combine cardio with weight lifting. Then it started to sprinkle (rain). I got home with the first bundle and for the sake of the campers I drove to the neighbors and absconded with an additional 100 magazines. So much for my walk, Ginger was happy as I did my second and only lap with her. So campers of CLC know how much goes into my preparation for camp each summer, and to my son Bruce who thinks I'm not an "art" teacher psthhhhhhhhhh to you

Naomi Antonoff's Sweat and Sour Pot Roast

Day off.....not for fun....Final Exam the culmination of two years of my teaching certification. 118 questions on how to teach math, reading, writing, art, social studies, science and physical education. Wow. Brookdale college here I come.

Then into the kitchen to make mom's brisket here for those of you who have devored this potroast over the years is the receipe....Bernard S. you are not allowed to use it since you have always made fun of mom's stuffed veal its hot dogs and beans for you.....

4-5 lbs 2nd cut brisket
2 medium onions sliced
2 c. small bit mixed dried fruit
1C white wine
1 1/2 c. beef stock broth (cubes okay)
salt and pepper to taste

Brown meat in heavy pot. (like the one Julia Child and Julia used in her cooking
Add onions and brown over medium heat.
Add wine, other liquids and then fruit
bring to simmer.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
Simmer covered for 2 1/2 to 4 hours by taste and mushy consistancy
remove roast from pot for slicing return to pot to sit until ready to serve.
I find that you can never have too much wine for extra gravy.
The roast taste better on the second day so make it the day before serving
As Julie and Julia say Bon appeite

The true fit of Calvin Klein Jeans

Okay so the first designer I will blog on is Calvin Klein. He does a skinny and a bootleg in a 31, 32 or 33 length.

They run pretty true to size and are labels 2 , 4, 6, 8 and go up to16. They come in denim , light denim, dark almost black denim and a true black.

The rise on these pants although stated as low are really a mid size jean for most of us between the ages 30-55. If you were a teenager you'd say uw these are so high.

Anyway, they are reasonabily priced at $48 and $59 depending on the wash.

They are a nice jean with a nice name at a nice price. At stores such as Lord and Taylor and Macy's they are usually coupon eligible which we all love.

go get them girls. Let me know if you have any questions, or let me know if you buy a pair and just love them.

Sizing up Jeans

As the "denim" expert at my retail establishment (through reputation only) not a paying postion, it is a known fact that a woman must try on a least 12 pairs of jeans in order to find 1 that fits her shape.

In this clothing obsessed world we are very fortunate to have hundreds of styles to choose from.

However, when one approaches the denim department where does one start. Well there are skinny jeans, not that it makes you look skinny but they are perfect to tuck into boots or with flats. Then there are the slight boot cut, regular boot cut that are nice with shoe boots and heels. On to the slight flare, regular flare and wide leg (thank god we are done with wide leg for now. )

Then there are the rises. dangerously low rise (bikini line), low rise 1" above the bikini line, midrise below the belly button, high rise at your waist, old fashion high rise above waist and couture high rise chic but sucks in your waist.

You have your non stretch, slightly stretch, full on stretch and 100% spandex.

Who fits what ....to be continued. It is my mission to try on each of these jeans and let you know who they should fit and why. If you are a specific body type give me a comment and I will answer with my best recommendation.

To date, I am familiar with levi, lucky, hudson, joe's, 7 for mankind, dkny, calvin, michael kors, not your daughters jeans, tummy tuck and a few smaller brands.

Test my knowledge.... have denim day

p.s. DKNY are awesome slightly stretch midrise jeans that fits all body type. The tip of the day is to buy them one size smaller you'll feel good and you'll look even better

Closing up day 2

Going to school to become a certified teacher, what was I thinking. I really wanted to prove to myself that I am smarter than a fifth grader, what I discovered was that I really missed the boat when I went to Denver to study Political Science (although I graduated with a major in psychology and a minor in speech commnication). After student teaching at various levels I learned that I like woring with kids. They are like little sponges soaking up the information that we give them. That they listen unconditionally, and want to know what we have to say. Of course this is the exact opposite of our own children. Anyway, after substitute teaching and then working at a sleepaway camp for many years, it finally occcurred to me that my calling, or what I should do when I grow up should be teaching. Now that I am on the threshold of this calling I am willing to edit it to include my interest in crafting and being creative. I have still yet to figure out where this fits into the equation but hopefully when I student teach everything will fall into place.

A New Day 2

Both my husband and I are fighting off colds. After three sleepless nights I decided to crawl into my daughter's empty bed for some long needed sleep. I miss her, my second daughter Dana went off to College last week into New York City. Although she has been out of the house most of her senior year with friends and her boyfriend I miss seeing her. There were days when she would just run in and change her cloths or tell us interesting facts about her day or Kevin's (they boyfriend) gigs. There were day when she slept out, but I always spoke with her to see how things were going. But the fact that all that remains are the hundreds of posters, tickets and memorabilia on her walls makes me sad that I have sent my middle "kiddle" off into the world. I am sure that most of you in my age group glorious 50s ( I turn 50 in January) are either empty nesters or getting close to that feel a sense of wierdness. Is our job over as schlepers, groomers etc. What do you think or feel? Off for a walk with Dan. Since I am nursing a stress fracture I have to be careful. Doing the Avon Walk in 26 days.......

The sun has set on day on

Okay it is the end of day one of my new blog that of a "Mod" housewife. How did we come up with the title of Mod housewife. Well for me Mod is two fold I think of myself as a mother or a devoted wife or as just plain "mod". Athough I work full time, I believe that any of us that coordinate our households as well as hold down full time jobs are still technically housewives.

So much for the blah blah blah of the beginning of a new blog. On to the good stuff. So how many of you share the feelings that once you take on a job outside the home that the first thing to go is the housekeeping. Although toilet cleaning is essential mopping or sweeping the kitchen floor seems to lack luster as well as importance. Gotta go to pick up hebrew carpool

Diary of Mod Housewife

Hi Why is our life worthy of a daily blog. I don't really know. However after viewing the Julie/Julia project I have decided that anything we do it worthy of blogging. I have been told over the years that I have a good writing style and that I tell a good story,......so I have decided to document the tribes and tribulations of my Mod life style with whom ever chooses to read it.

My name is Heidi, I am a Mod (modern mother and devoted wife) who also wears many different hats. Today I am just going to start with the basics. Wife of 23 years (September 21) Dan, mother to Becky (20), Dana (18) and Bruce (16). We live in suburban New Jersey in a single family dwelling with our Dog Ginger, Turtle Ninja and Rabbit samores. Surrounded by beautiful folliage on the outside of our home, and all types of crazy art work created by me during my 11 years of summer camp. ....I am now off to work at a retail establishment where I make my megar wages and family benefits. TTYL welcome to my blog Heidi.......
